Beaches, green suburbs and attractive architecture are the hallmarks of Adelaide, the main city in South Australia. It bills itself as a city with a country feel where most areas are within 20 minutes of the centre and it is certainly compact and easy to navigate.
Adelaide’s Mediterranean climate and relatively low humidity attract a high percentage of retirees and while the sea is cold the beaches themselves are fabulous. This is one of Australia’s more affordable cities with many detached houses, often on generous plots.
The inner and eastern suburbs are particularly sought after along with areas around the beach and on the hill. Burnside is a chic eastern suburb ten minutes from the centre with large period detached houses. Wealthy Hyde Park to the south has handsome homes and several private schools.
The quiet foothills of the Adelaide Hills, a famed wine-growing region, are family-friendly with popular towns including Stirling, twenty minutes drive east from Adelaide city.
