Residential property in Switzerland

Switzerland with its winning combination of natural beauty and economic stability has proved a perennial favourite for international property purchasers.

Its position at the centre of Europe but outside of the Eurozone attracts investors from across the world; while its well-organised and healthy lifestyle, consistently ranked among the finest in Europe, ensures that once there it is hard to leave.

Geneva and Zurich are international cities with the bonus of easy access to the Alps. Homes in the prime Geneva suburbs of Cologny, Veyrier and Bernex are within two hours of some of the best skiing in Europe. Up in the Alps themselves Verbier remains one of the most sought after and accessible ski resorts along with the more exclusive Zermatt and St Moritz.

The Swiss government controls the number of foreigners buying property by issuing a limited number of annual permits and each of Switzerland’s 26 cantons (regions) then set their own rules for property ownership. Some do not allow non-Swiss residents to buy property at all and some do not allow property to be resold within five years of purchase. Non-Swiss buyers may only purchase one property in Switzerland, unless they become Swiss resident.
