The Channel Islands are a group of islands in the English Channel clustered off the coast of Normandy in France. They are independent, self-governing possessions of the British Crown, neither part of the UK nor the European Union but citizens of the Channel Islands have British passports with free movement within the EU. Entry requirements are the same as for the UK and English is the main language.
The chief islands are Jersey, Guernsey, Sark, Herm and Alderney, all connected by ferries with international airports on Jersey and Guernsey. Beaches, quaint harbours and a delightful old-school charm matched by sub-tropical gardens and extensive birdlife ensure their appeal for tourists and residents.
The largest and busiest are Jersey and Guernsey, significant offshore financial centres. The other islands are more dependent on tourism and agriculture but from car-free Sark, just 3 miles by 1.5 to the extensive wildlife and beaches on pretty Alderney they provide a get-away from it all base for world-weary buyers.
