Botswana is one of Africa’s least densely populated countries, dominated by the Kalahari Desert and the Okavango Delta. These support an extraordinary range of fauna and animals including antelopes, elephants, rhinoceros and big cats: lions, cheetahs and leopards.
Being landlocked in southern Africa relies successfully on diamonds and upmarket safari tourism for the bulk of its income. The former British colony has performed as one of the fastest growing economies in the world since its independence in 1966.
The capital city, Gaborone, is in the southeast within ten miles of the South African border. This is Botswana’s largest city with a university and many international businesses. The tourist town of Maun, the gateway to the Okavango Delta, connects through its airport to Johannesburg and Victoria Falls.
